Well, simply put they are a means by which people find websites, articles, etc., on a specific topic. That topic is defined by a main word (or phrase).

2. Weekly Advertising Tip

Long Tail Keywords – Should I use them?

There is very little you can do on the internet these days
without hearing abut keywords. So what are they?

Well, simply put they are a means by which people find
websites, articles, etc., on a specific topic. That topic
is defined by a main word (or phrase). For example, if you
wanted to find information, websites, articles, etc., on a
subject like dog training, your keyword could be ‘dog
training’, or if you wanted to be more specific, since that
is a large subject, you could use ‘lead training your dog’.

In this example the latter ‘lead training your dog’ is in
fact a long tail keyword. The phrase ‘long tail keyword’
therefore refers to phrases of two or more words which can
be used to define the subject matter. These are becoming
more and more used as the internet grows, and single
keywords are vastly over-used and saturated. They also
make it much easier to specify segments of a larger topic
or niche.

While this can be very good, it’s still advisable where
possible, to keep the keyword strings as short as possible,
while still giving as clear an indication as possible as to
the meaning/subject matter.

In order to do this, it’s worth searching for slightly
lesser used phrases, or words within the phrases, because
the obvious, most used, etc will be over subscribed and the
competition will be enormous.

By thinking of a different way of saying the same thing, or
using a lesser known but still obvious phrase, you could
still find that there is sufficient traffic for your
purpose. That traffic is still quality, targeted, traffic,
already interested in your subject. So you could well have
found a small targeted traffic source which has a higher
conversion rate which will work much better.
